It makes me grateful that the second trailer manages to outline almost the whole plot of the film in two minutes so there’s already a lot of stuff floating around. Anyway this will probably make more sense if you look at this first.

Definitely with you on the thing about her becoming his protector. One of the things I really appreciate about the film is that Lisbeth personifies one of my major preoccupations, which is that while in stories women are supposed to be protected from the big bad world by some Big Strong Man, in reality it’s often either the other way around or simply women have to protect themselves (and men have to protect themselves). Which also ties up to the Harriet stuff. I’m also highly besotted with her version of care, which has no soft edges any more than she does, and lies completely outside of the stereotypical idea of how to express anything approaching affection or kindness. She is kind, and she does care, but her kindness is “I will stop you from bleeding horribly” and her care is “I want to make the world safer by destroying someone dangerous” rather than “I will hold you and tell you it is all okay”; no one’s ever told her that and if they did it would be a lie, so why should she lie to anyone else about it?

Exactly, she doesn’t sugarcoat things because what would be the point? It’s like small talk or politeness, they’re just below her interest. What’s the point in lying to someone and telling them everything’s going to be fine when it isn’t? There’s a kind of brutal honesty to her which I like. Even if she cares about someone she’d probably punch them if they did something stupid.
